Caring for your birdhouse

Rhino Birdhouse

If you are like me, you love birdhouses and feeders.  Nothing like seeing the birds perching on their house/feeder or watching as they care for their young.  I like to have my situated to where I can watch them from the deck without disturbing them.  And we all know that along with having birdhouses comes the not so wonderful job of cleaning them.

You will need to wait until there are no birds in the nest. Most leave for the winter but can vary on when.  If you have not seen any activity for two weeks, it should be safe to clean it.  Birdhouses should come with a vent for air circulation and a door or opening allowing you to clean it out.  If you have one of our birdhouses, there are two screws on the bottom allowing you to take off the bottom.

Steps are pretty simple.  Wait till the birds are gone, put on gloves and clean out whatever is in there. Some people use a bleach cleaner to kill any germs or fungus.  I just use a mild anti-bacterial soap like dawn.  It’ just a personal preference.

Another tip to keep in mind if you have one of our birdhouses/feeders/planters.  You can extend it’s life by spraying a clear UV sealant on it about once every two years.  They sell this at most hardware stores.  Just look for the kind that is non-yellowing and good for outdoors.

Our time at the KC Pet Expo

Nov 3rd and 4th, we were at the Greater KC Pet Expo.  Never participating in the event before, we were not quite sure what to expect.  We had a wonderful time.  Many vendors were there, attributing to just about any type of pet product you can think of.   It was quite enjoyable to see all the different types of pets – dogs, cats, ferrets, rodents, pigs and more.   I’m a sucker for the short nosed breeds.  It was all I could do to not adopt every Pug, Bulldog, and Boston Terrier available.  But alas, my little Kali would not handle it well if I came home with another dog.  She’s my little 18 lb Frenchton who thinks she can take on 140 lb dogs.  She’s all cute and cuddly with people, not so much with other animals.  Ash, on the other hand, is my happy little Rhino.

They had a Lure Track that was very entertaining.  If you are not familiar with that, it’s a lure they have tied on a string that dogs chase around a track.  Occasionally a dog would get loose and go running for their freedom.  The dog would come flying by with people chasing after him.  Then we’d see him running back with people still chasing him.   Every time they thought they had him, he would slip on by.

It was very pleasant interacting with the different pet owners and explaining how our shop works.  We heard many wonderful stories of pets and kids.

If you ever get a chance to go to one of the Pet Expo, you should go. I think you’ll enjoy it.

New additions to our store

Over the next few months, we will be adding new products to our store.  These products will range from pillows, pet candles to pet pampering.  We will be reviewing and selecting only the ones that pass our integrity checks.

One recent addition is the Paw Balm from Willowberry Pet.  They use only the finest natural ingredients proven to improve paws and noses. They are also active in the pet community and often contribute to various functions.

Another addition being worked on is the ability to have your pet put on a pillow. This can be for fun purposes or memorials.

Happy Halloween

Fall is my favorite time of the year with Halloween being my favorite holiday!  The temps are cooler but not too cold, trees are turning beautiful shades of color, and kids are running around enjoying the season.  And with Halloween, even the pets can participate in the festivities.

There’s just something about seeing all the kids in costume ringing the doorbell, eyes all aglow with excitement.  Normally we decorate the yard, however, this year our schedule did not allow it. The grand-kids are also away so it was not as much of a priority.   When we do decorate, we like to go all out – life sized casket, couple of ghouls, tombstones, and more.

There is a gentleman who does tutorials on creating all sorts of Halloween items. He is using the business name of Stolloween.  Google him if you are ever curious about making some really neat items.
